40 firefighters tackle huge blaze in flats as one person treated by ambulance crews

One person is currently being treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of a flat fire.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are tackling the blaze in York Hill, West Norwood.

Part of a two-roomed flat on the second floor of a residential block is alight. One person managed to escape the building before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived and is being treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The LFB’s 999 Control Officers have taken 14 calls to the blaze.

Station Commander Pat Ackroyd, who is at the scene, said: “Firefighters are working incredibly hard to quickly bring the fire under control. 

“York Hill is partially closed whilst crews work to make the scene safe, but we expect this to re-open shortly.”.

The LFB was called at around 9.20am and fire crews from West Norwood, Brixton, Norbury and surrounding fire stations are at the scene. 

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
