Alarm raised as sofa goes up in flames in high-rise block

A sofa in a communal area on the 11th floor of a 14-storey block of flats has been destroyed by fire.

There were no report of any injuries but the blaze saw the mobilisation of 10 fire engines and about 70 firefighters at the block in Thurlow Street in Southwark.

The brigade’s 999 control centre took the first call alerting it to the fire shortly before 9pm last night, and the fire was under control at around 10.20pm.

Control mobilised crews from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Dockhead, Lambeth, Bethnal Green, Brixton, Soho and Paddington fire stations.
