‘Disgraceful and unforgivable’: Grenfell tower to be demolished

Bereaved relatives and survivors have described the government decision to dismantle Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died, as “disgraceful and unforgivable”.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said the west London tower block would be dismantled to ground level during a meeting with families yesterday.

But in a statement, Grenfell United, which represents some of the bereaved families and survivors, said: “Today’s meeting showed just how upset bereaved and survivors are about now having their views heard or be considered in the decision.

“Ignoring the voices of the bereaved on the future of our loved ones’ gravesite is disgraceful and unforgivable.”

The spokesman for Grenfell United said Ms Rayner had refused to confirm how many bereaved people and survivors had been spoken to in the “recent, short four-week consultation”.

The government has previously been warned the structure may be unsafe due to the extent of the fire damage.

A formal announcement by the government is expected to be made tomorrow.
