Early risers put best feet forward to welcome May’s arrival in traditional style
It was a perfect start to Summer for this group of traditionalists as the mist on the grass disappeared in warm sunlight and the noise of bells, sticks and clashing of swords surprised early morning joggers and dog walkers.
Joined by the Mayor of Merton, Councillor, Slawek Szczepanski and his wife, Consort Kamila Dyczko, and a select crowd of intrepid supporters, Greensleeves Morris Men celebrated Mayday in traditional fashion by the Windmill at Wimbledon Common.
The dawn dance took place at 5.30am on Thursday – May 1. A selection of English morris and longsword dances were performed before the group repaired to the Merton Abbey Mills, ‘Watermill Grill’ run by Leonora and John Caton, for a full English breakfast followed by some Mayday folk songs.

Neil Barrett, Squire of the Greensleeves Morris Men, said: “We have done this every year since returning to Merton in the late eighties, and we are very grateful to all the mayors and other brave folk who have foregone their sleep to join us. Thanks to Leonora and John for the lovely breakfast.
“It is an excellent start to our celebrations for the club’s centenary celebrations next year, and we will commence this year’s programme by dancing in Clapham, Richmond and Wimbledon this month when we will continue to share our love of these traditions.”
