Free air quality alerts sent straight to residents’ phones
By Hermia Rhodes
Greenwich council has partnered with AirTEXT in order to send free alerts to residents when bad or polluted air is forecast.
The tool can be accessed via text, voicemail or email, and an air quality map is available across the UK.
Air pollution remains one of the largest environmental health hazards. The council hopes that this action will improve public health in the borough, especially amongst those with heart conditions, small children, and the elderly.
Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and Borough of Sanctuary, Cllr Mariam Lolavar, said: “There are stark health inequalities that exist within the UK, and the situation is no different when we look at the effects air quality has on our health.
“We wouldn’t accept drinking dirty water so we shouldn’t accept breathing dirty air. AirTEXT allows everyone to live their best, healthiest lives and protects the most vulnerable.”
