Greetings for new Millennium Village tenants – with council keen to flag up positive impacts
New council tenants of Greenwich Millennium Village joined the council leader and local ward councillors at a special event to welcome them to their new homes.
The event provided tenants with essential support and introduced new neighbours to their ward councillors in the newest community on the peninsula.
The village by the Thames is to the south of the O2 complex, next to the purpose-built Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park and recreational areas. The village currently has the Millennium Primary School, a GP surgery, and a few shops.
Council leader Anthony Okereke and Greenwich Peninsula ward councillors Denise Scott-McDonald, Nick Williams and David Gardner met tenants at the event and spoke to them about the support on offer from the town hall.
Cllr Okereke said: “We’re delighted that 100 tenants who were previously on our housing register are now settling in and enjoying their homes and helping to forge a new community on the Peninsula.
“We’re dedicated to making sure our homes are safe and secure, and with the support of our council and partner services we will be there to help and support them throughout their tenancies. Whether it’s buying or building, we’re delivering new housing for people who really need it in Royal Greenwich.”
Last year the council bought 100 one, two and three-bedroom flats at Greenwich Millennium Village with its own funds and a grant from the Greater London Authority to let to people on the housing register.
The council is keen to play up the positive impact of the new homes, quoting one unnamed tenant as saying: “The flat is lovely. When we first came to view it, we were really impressed with the quality it has, like underfloor heating. We’ve just found out the hire costs for the community centre for a children’s party so there’s lots of potential for activities for children.”
They quote another saying: “Living in a serene environment has made a huge difference compared to where we were living before. I am very happy with our home here. The location is great, and it is peaceful, nice and clean. It has made a positive impact on our family life.”
