Hollywood star Damian Lewis herds sheep across Southwark Bridge

Hollywood actor Damian Lewis took part in a quirky tradition dating back hundreds of years by herding sheep over the River Thames on Sunday.

The London Sheep Drive saw more than 1,000 Freemen of the City drive their sheep over Southwark Bridge, along an ancient trading route.

The Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor, who is himself a Freeman of the City, described the event as “a career highlight”.

The celebrations began in 2013 to mark the medieval right to bring produce to market over the Thames without paying tolls.

Ten animals are driven across each side of the bridge at a time, by successive groups of Freemen.

The animals have all attended major agricultural events throughout the Summer to acclimate them to large crowds and are under the constant care of their usual shepherd and veterinary surgeon at all times. Representatives of the RSPCA are also on stand-by during the day.

Mr Lewis, 53, was offered a spot in this year’s drive by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen – one of the oldest livery companies in the city which dates back to 1180.

Mr Lewis was photographed in a long coat, guiding the animals ahead of other freemen dressed in black hats and red and fur cloaks at the event.

Alongside the Sheep Drive there was also a Livery Fair, where visitors watched as Livery Companies demonstrated their traditional skills and businesses showcased their clothing, home accessories and gifts, all made from wool.

The fundraising event raised thousands of pounds for the Woolmen Charity, which supports the wool trade, and the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which works to improve “London’s most pressing societal issues”.

Michael Mainelli, Lord Mayor of London said: “This is a significant event in the City of London calendar and allows the public to learn more about the City Liveries and the wool trade.

“Wool played an important role in the history of the UK and the City and continues to connect us with our international partners around the world.

“Besides that, the day was a lot of fun for all those taking part and coming down to watch.”
