Labour selects Croydon Mayoral candidate they believe is exactly who borough needs
The Labour Party has selected Rowenna Davis as its candidate for Mayor of Croydon at next year’s local elections.
The party claims she represents a clean break from the past for Croydon Labour. She’s served as a teacher on London Road and is a councillor in Waddon, where she lives and is raising her two young daughters.
As Croydon’s chair of scrutiny for two years, they believe Ms Davis has earned a reputation for tough and independent questioning within the council as well as a deep understanding of the council’s finances.
“Crucial expertise for getting Croydon on a sound footing and putting an end to the chaos and decline of Jason Perry’s Conservative administration,” according to a party press release.
They say Ms Davis has a record of getting behind community campaigns including fighting against food poverty, low pay and poor housing.
Rowenna Davis said: “I am delighted to be standing as Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Croydon.
“Croydon needs change. I love my home, but we’re being let down. Our borough is the ‘fly-tipping capital of England’, our streets and neighbourhoods feel neglected, and too many people feel unsafe, while our town centre is a depressing shadow of the delight it used to be.
“For too long, Croydon has been run down by mismanagement and bad development. That changes with me – I’ll put people first.
“Croydon Labour is under new management. I’m proud to have won the trust of members with such a clear mandate for change, and now I want to earn the trust of the public. Together, we’ll make Croydon a place to be proud of.”
