Making seasonal decorations from nature – youngsters get in the mood for Christmas
Children and their families from the Wimbledon Common Nature Club met for a session on “Natural Seasonal Decorations” on Sunday – as the countdown to Christmas begins in earnest.
After gathering at the Information Centre the youngsters then went out onto the common to search for logs, twigs, leaves, moss, holly, ivy and dried Cow Parsley.
On their return to the centre, they got creative by studding oranges with cloves, spraying their logs with gold and silver and sticking on candles to make attractive festive table decorations, wreathes for the door and making cards for loved ones. Afterwards they all enjoyed mince pies and a drink.
Club leader Auriel Glanville, said: “Everybody had a wonderful time making their decorations and gifts for family and friends, with the lovely scent of oranges and cloves filling the Information Centre.”
The club’s next session will be on January 5 when ‘Owl Pellets’ will be the theme, with a look at what our feathered friends eat. It takes place from 10am-noon and is aimed at 6-14 year-olds.
It’s always free, though donations are welcome.
