Man rescued from flames after fire breaks out in mixed-use building

Firefighters rescued a man from a burning building in central London this morning.

Six fire engines and about 40 firefighters tackled the blaze at a mixed-use building in Tottenham Street, near Goodge Street Tube station.

Plumes of smoke could be seen across the capital, causing 14 members of the public to call the London Fire Brigade (LFB) for help at around 7.45am.

Firefighters rescued one man from the building using a fire escape hood. He was taken to hospital by London Ambulance service crews.

Fire escape hoods provide members of the public with up to 15 minutes protection from dangerous fire gases and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people.

One of the LFB’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower to provide the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire.

Most of the ground floor was damaged by the fire, the LFB said.

Crews from Soho, Euston, Islington and surrounding fire stations brought the blaze under control by around 9.30am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
