Money worries making parenting harder, study finds

Money worries are making parenting harder for families in South London, a new study has found.

The research from family support charity Home-Start Lambeth found that 86 per cent of families they help say financial stress is making parenting harder, with single parents especially feeling the impact of the cost of living.

The study, based on responses from 300 families, also found that 54 per cent of single parents struggle to afford essentials like food and nappies, compared to 39 per cent of two parent families.

This comes after Home-Start Lambeth saw a surge in demand for its services, including emotional and practical support to families with children aged between 0 and five years old.

Susie Baker, chief executive officer of Home-Start Lambeth, said: “Raising young children is demanding and can feel isolating, even in the best of circumstances.

“When compounded by significant financial pressures, it’s easy for parents and carers to feel overwhelmed. Our volunteers take a strengths-based approach to their work with parents.

“We appreciate how hard these challenges are and we celebrate the strength of parents for persevering.”

Home-Start Lambeth is an independent charity – part of the Home-Start London network.

The group is actively recruiting new volunteers to help families. To learn more or get involved, visit:  https://homestartlambeth.co.uk/apply-for-a-volunteering-role/
