Police fundraising for animal charity after traumatic call-out

Police officers are taking part in a 25km walk next month to raise funds for an animal charity after a traumatic call-out at the start of August.

At around 6.20pm on August 6, police arrived at a man’s flat in Cherry Orchard Road, Croydon, to “carry out arrest enquiries in connection with an ongoing investigation”.

But, after officers arrived, the man barricaded himself inside his flat before throwing objects at police.

A Met spokeswoman said: “We are aware of some distressing videos shared online filmed during this incident in which two puppies are thrown from a balcony.

“This forms part of the matters being investigated.”

The stand off continued for almost nine hours.

The scene was attended by several police vehicles, as well as specially trained officers from the Tactical Support Group, and the London Fire Brigade.

Cordons were put in place as a precaution to ensure the safety of the public.

The man was arrested shortly before 3am on August 7, on suspicion of cruelty to animals, criminal damage, indecent exposure and breach of a court order.

He was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a South London hospital.

Some of the officers who attended the incident are now seeking sponsorship as they prepare to take part in the Thames Bridges 25km Trek on October 20, to raise money for Croydon Animal Samaritans.

The Croydon Response Team’s Just Giving page said: “Recently our team attended a tough animal cruelty case which has affected a number of colleagues. In response to this we would like to give something back to our furry friends and volunteers who care for them.”

Croydon Animal Samaritans rescues vulnerable and abandoned animals and offers essential veterinary care, rehabilitation and rehoming services.

The charity has been under increasing pressure recently due to vets’ bills for neutering rescued animals and a rising number of abandoned puppies and kittens.

The Just Giving Page said: “Unfortunately, the ongoing costs of care and resources have increased, making it challenging for them to continue their vital work.

“By coming together to support this fundraiser, we can help ensure that these animals receive the love, care, and second chances they deserve.”
