Record numbers of visitors to South London libraries ranked busiest in the UK

South London libraries are among the busiest libraries in the UK, according to national statistics.  

Residents are making the most of the 12 libraries in Greenwich, the borough ranking as the location with the most visits compared to its population.  

Woolwich Centre Library also stood out nationally by being the second busiest library in the UK. 547,440 people walked through its doors between 2020 and 2021. 

Along with visits, of all London boroughs, Royal Greenwich loaned the fourth highest number of books, giving out a staggering 777, 976 in a year. 

Greenwich councillor Adel Khaireh said: “Our libraries offer so much more than books. They offer a welcoming space to spend the day, free to use computers, advice hubs and a range of activities for all ages. 

“These figures prove just how important our libraries are to our communities. We’re so proud of the diverse activities bringing people together and ensuring that as a borough we have the best services possible for our residents.” 

Paul Drumm, GLL libraries partnership manager for Greenwich said: “These great figures show the continued importance and relevance of public libraries at the heart of local communities for business, study, entertainment or just for the pleasure of reading. 

“I applaud our council partners for continuing to support public library services for the health and wellbeing of local communities.”
