Search is on for new operator to take over Catford Mews

The search has begun to find a new operator for Catford Mews after the shock closure of Lewisham’s only cinema last month.

Catford Mews, which sits within Catford Centre, was repossessed by Lewisham council on October 29.

In a statement, the local authority said the Really Local Group (RLG), the operators of Catford Mews, had run up more than £650,000 in arrears since 2019.

Lewisham council said the building’s owner, the Catford Regeneration Partnership Limited (CRPL), which is wholly owned by the council, could not sustain “this level of financial burden”.

But the move sparked a bitter row, with RLG stating it was “surprised and saddened” at the closure, accusing the council of a “destructive” path by throwing “impossible” terms in a challenging environment.

Now the council is searching for a new owner, with early interest already being registered with CRPL about to go to market, the local authority said.

A spokesman from Lewisham council said: “The council recognises the impact the temporary closure of Catford Mews has had on the community and the concerns raised by residents but also the legal duty of CRPL to be financially responsible.”

Last week the CRPL’s Independent Board of Directors rejected a follow-up proposal from RGL after both parties were “unable to agree terms” that would provide assurance that rent arrears and future rent would be paid, the council said.

Lewisham council said it is “confident” that a new operator which will “add value to Catford Town Centre”, will be found as soon as possible.

Viewings of the space will start this month.

A spokesman from the council said: “Lewisham council’s focus is to work with CRPL, to speed up the reopening of Catford Mews while supporting the businesses and employees affected.”
