Shortlist of three names for new leisure centre – now it’s time for residents to choose
The new leisure centre at Woolwich is due to open at the end of the year – so the time is right to get the name sorted out, Greenwich council has decided.
The new multi-million-pound venue at Woolwich New Road will provide state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the town, and all it needs is a catchy moniker.
But interested residents who have been asked to take part in deciding a name will not need to get the creative juices flowing too much as the choice is down to three shortlisted ones.
These are: MOVE Woolwich. Woolwich Active and Woolwich Waves.
Residents will have two weeks to vote until midday on Wednesday, 30 April. Votes can be cast by visiting: royalgreenwich.gov.
Cllr Anthony Okereke, leader of Greenwich council, said: “We are months away from the opening of our game-changing new leisure centre in Woolwich – a flagship project for the council,
“ I know that excitement isn’t lost on our residents who will soon be able to take advantage of all the fantastic facilities that will be available to them.
“The new leisure centre is at the forefront of our plan to improve the quality of life and health of our residents. We’ve invested in the health and wellbeing of residents and this new venue will be used for generations to come, so it feels fitting that residents get the chance to name it.”
Once open, the new leisure centre will be home to two swimming pools, water slides, a gym across two levels, a health suite with a spa and sauna, a five-a-side football pitch, sports courts, a creche, soft play and party space, and a cafe.
At 12,800m sq, the three-storey Morgan Sindall building will become one of the country’s largest urban leisure centres when it opens.
Cllr Sandra Bauer, cabinet member for equality, culture and communities, said: “This is an exciting moment and a chance for our residents to have a say in a project that very soon they will be able to reap the rewards of.
“The benefits of being active are well known but equally important is that all members of the community have access to top class facilities. The leisure centre, or whatever residents choose to call it, will provide exactly that for many, many years to come.”
Cllr Majid Rahman, cabinet member for planning, estate renewal and development, said: “The new state-of-the-art leisure centre sits at the heart of the regeneration programme in Woolwich and when it opens later this year will add to the transformative work that has already been delivered.
“The regeneration of Woolwich remains a key priority for the council. The leisure centre adds to a strong portfolio of delivery that already includes the refurbishment of Tramshed Theatre, the opening of Woolwich Works, and the extensive improvements throughout the town centre which are making it a more attractive place for people to visit, shop and work.”
