Victory Community Park reopens after massive £1m makeover
A Walworth park has just reopened to the community following a £1,050,000 makeover.
Southwark council’s funding has transformed Victory Community Park, providing an upgraded ball court, a refurbished play area with new equipment, a table tennis area and seating area, and enhanced accessibility with improved entrances and pathways.
Upgrades required extensive landscaping that will also introduce a variety of wildflower meadows to boost the park’s biodiversity.
Councillor Portia Mwangangye, Cabinet Member for Parks and Open Spaces, said: “It’s amazing to see the changes to Victory Community Park.
“The upgrade is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together to shape the future of their local area.
“We are proud of the work that has been done here and look forward to seeing the park become a thriving centre of activity for the East Walworth community.”
The improvements came after the community asked for a safer, more welcoming space for activities and events during a series of consultation events and meetings with The Friends of Victory Community Park and Elba Place Nature Garden group.
Victory Community Park was created more than 40 years ago by residents situated between Rodney Place, Munton Road, Balfour Street and Victory Place.
Plans to refurbish the park have been in the pipeline since 2017, but financial constraints saw significant changes to plans in the past seven years.
Victory Community Park is one of more than 130 parks in the borough, 30 of which have received Green Flag Awards for their maintenance and management by volunteers.
