Writer and MP welcomed to Theatre Peckham’s family of patrons

A theatre has welcomed two new patrons as it heads towards its 40th anniversary next year.

Celebrated playwright Roy Williams and Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Member of Parliament for Peckham, are the latest patrons to join Theatre Peckham in Havil Street.

Mr Williams is an award-winning writer whose plays include The Death of England Trilogy at the National Theatre, The Firm at Hampstead Theatre and Sucker Punch at the Royal Court Theatre.

He was awarded the OBE for Services to Drama in 2008, and was made a fellow of The Royal Society of Literature in 2018.

Following the announcement, he said: “It is places like Theatre Peckham that got a shy young black kid into theatre. I have never looked back. Honoured and thrilled to be a patron.”

Ms Fahnbulleh was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on July 9, 2024, and MP for Peckham in the same month.

She studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford and obtained a PhD degree in economic development from the London School of Economics.

She said: “Theatre Peckham is a vital part of our community – where young people can explore their creativity, find their voices, and tell their own stories.

“I’m honoured to become a Patron and to support the team’s incredible work in nurturing the next generation of artists.”

The pair join a distinguished group of Patrons, including actor John Boyega, director Paulette Randall and actress Jenny Agutter.

A spokeswoman for Theatre Peckham said: “These highly respected leaders in their fields have come together because of their deep admiration and shared commitment to the mission and values of Theatre Peckham.

“Their support will help us continue to nurture creativity, diversity, and the next generation of artists in our community as we embark on this exciting and inspiring anniversary in 2026.”
