Passer-by rescued cop who was having head smashed against a wall in Streatham

A cop pursuing a suspect had her hair grabbed and head repeatedly smashed against a wall – until a passer-by grabbed him and helped her handcuff her attacker.

She had been one of two officers chasing a pair of suspicious teenagers off a bus and she pursued one who fled. But he turned on her and started beating her in Hopton Road, Streatham, around 6.40pm yesterday, Friday June 14.

The 24-year-old cop was only able to detain him when a member of the public intervened to help her.

Police are asking for the member of the public who came to an officer’s aid to come forward.

The victim was one of two officers in a marked police car who were told by an off duty officer about the two teenagers abandoning a moped in High Road, Streatham yesterday evening.

The officers spotted the suspects boarding a bus towards Brixton and followed it but the suspect duo spotted them and got off the bus.

One of the suspects fled and was pursued by the 24-year-old officer, onto Hopton Road, where she held him and tried to search him.

But he grabbed her hair and struck her head against a wall multiple times before throwing her to the ground.

It was then the passer-by intervened and helped to restrain her attacker so that he could be handcuffed.

The member of the public then walked away before he could be asked for his details.

Police have asked the man to come forward. “He is a witness and is in no way a suspect in the incident,” the Met confirmed.

He is white, of slim build, and may have been wearing glasses.

The officer was taken to hospital; she suffered cuts and bruises to her face, knees and arms and potential whiplash injuries, but is otherwise not seriously injured.

The arrested male, aged 15, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency worker twice, theft of a motor vehicle and taken to a South London police station, where he remains.

The other teenage suspect was also arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and remains in custody.

If you are the member of the public referred to, or you know who he is, please call police on 101 quoting CAD 7003/14JUN19, or attend your local police station.
