Project helps students to make a difference to their community
Pupils from a Lambeth secondary school have been taking part in an empowering community action project throughout the spring term.
Saint Gabriel’s College, in Langton Road, Camberwell, partnered with the First Give charity to ignite social consciousness in pupils and encourage them to make a difference to their local community through social action.
Led by First Give director Louisa Searle, the programme works in partnership with secondary schools across the UK to tackle social issues in their local community.
Through the programme, Year 7 students took part in a series of workshops, assemblies, and lessons to inspire charitable action.
This enables pupils to get involved in social action projects aimed to raise much needed funds for their chosen charity, while simultaneously raising awareness of social issues.
Across a two-month period, each group of pupils identified social issues present in the school’s local community and researched charities that are working hard to minimise these issues.
Students learnt about the impact the charities were having on the local community and considered how their group could support.
Small groups of students then planned and executed social action activities, to support issues such as mental health, diabetes and racism, to raise awareness and fundraise.
Each group presented to their peers who voted for their chosen finalists.
Students Elizebeth, Tyrone, Jai’bion and Grace formed the winning team, and were awarded a £1,000 donation to their selected charity – Power the Fight – launched in 2019, the charity tackles violence affecting young people.
Lead teacher, Bethan Tanner, said: “This is actually the third year that we’ve run it, but the first year that we’ve been able to have a live final.
“I was really chuffed to see these guys and their peers actually get up and be able to showcase all their hard work.
“We just love the way the programme really stimulates the social action and social justice, and for us as a school, it’s one of our key values and one of our curricula aims, that we want all our students to be successful proactive citizens, and this programme really aligns with that.”
