Southwark leader becomes chairman of London boroughs

Southwark council’s leader Cllr Peter John has been elected chair of London Councils.

Cllr John succeeds Claire Kober, also of the Labour party, who stepped down as Haringey leader at the last election.

In a statement he said London Councils has “an essential role” in ensuring the expertise of London boroughs is harnessed effectively.

Cllr John added: “Ensuring London’s services are sustainably funded is a key priority, particularly in the context of the government’s fair funding review and the next spending review.

“We know children’s services and adult social care are under incredible pressure in the capital.

“We need to make the case for sustainable funding and why investing in prevention at local level represents good value for all Londoners.”
