Southwark ten-year-old crowned ‘top mathlete’ in global maths competition
A student from Southwark has been crowned ‘top mathlete’ in a global competition.
Ten-year-old Mosolade from Michael Faraday School, bagged the gold medal in the UK and Global Year 6 category of the World Maths Day challenge.
The global competition has over one million students from 17,000 schools across 200 countries participated.
Mosolade said: “I have always enjoyed maths and I am so grateful for this first place award.”
Mosolade, along with his classmates, tested his mathematical prowess against his UK and global peers while participating in engaging activities designed to highlight the wonder of numbers and most importantly make maths fun.
He joins nine UK champions from nine other age group categories.
Kate Evans, Mosolade’s class teacher, said: “Pupils progressed through 20 live maths games, of varying difficulties based on the student’s age.
“Mosolade is an incredibly motivated young person who never gives up on a challenge.
“He absolutely deserved to win this award and we are so proud of him.”
Event organiser, Graham Frickers from 3P Learning the creators of the Mathletics platform that hosted the global challenge said: “The response to this year’s competition has been incredible – there is a global buzz about maths.
“Creating a worldwide arena means kids from anywhere in the UK can compete against their peers from both the UK and across the globe.
“It’s a tough competition and I’m delighted to congratulate our 10 UK champions for their significant achievements.”
An online Hall of Fame tracked points throughout the competition with prizes awarded to the top pupils and schools across the globe.
