Adam Barrett excited by Gary Rowett’s Millwall appointment – can’t wait to learn off experienced Championship boss

Adam Barrett says he is looking forward to learning off new manager Gary Rowett – after signing off his caretaker spell in charge with a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City tonight.

The Lions appointed Rowett yesterday but he is not set to meet the players until training on Thursday and will be in the Den dugout for Saturday’s home game against Stoke City.

Barrett had been one of three men shortlisted for the Millwall vacancy after Neil Harris stepped down earlier this month – Wycombe’s Gareth Ainsworth also being interviewed by owner John Berylson last week.

“I met with the new manager yesterday and I think it is an exciting time for the club,” said Barrett, who had been first-team coach before Harris’ exit. “I’m really looking forward to working with him and learning from him.

“He is an experienced manager in the Championship and I think he’ll bring a fresh outlook – I can’t wait for that.

“It is great having an experienced manager coming in with new ideas for someone like myself, who is two-and-a-half or three years into my coaching career. I’ve absolutely loved stepping up. I’m proud and honoured the board had confidence in me to step me up on a short-term basis.

“Now we have Gary coming in and with Callum [Davidson] and Joe [Carnall]. I can’t wait to get started and learn. Hopefully we can move forward together.”
