Addicks ask Big Sam to coach defence

Former Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce has been asked to hold a defensive coaching clinic for Charlton’s defence, writes Richard Cawley.

The 62-year-old stepped down as Eagles boss in the summer – although the South London club tried on more than one occasion to persuade him out of retirement after sacking his successor Frank de Boer. Allardyce, pictured left, was in the directors’ box at The Valley for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

Charlton manager Karl Robinson, who was part of Big Sam’s backroom team at Blackburn, said: “He’s someone who has done so much for me since I was a young boy coaching in the Premier League. He is one of the best managers and coaches in the Premier League.

“He’s hopefully going to try and do something with the back four for me.

“He has been here three or four times and I haven’t lost.

“If he wants a first-team coaching job, I’m sure we would give him a desk!

“He had a TV show in London on Sunday and rather than going to a Premier League game he came to The Valley to witness us get a win.”
