Alex Neil: Incredible Millwall fans helped us to be in the Championship play-off hunt
Alex Neil paid tribute to Millwall’s supporters following their club’s 3-1 defeat at Burnley, a result that brought an end to the club’s pursuit of a Championship play-off place.
The Lions took an early lead at Turf Moor through Mihailo Ivanovic but were eventually overpowered by the Premier League-bound Clarets.
Jaidon Anthony struck either side of a Josh Brownhill double to seal the points for the hosts, who missed out on the Championship title due to a late Leeds United winner at Plymouth.
Neil was full of praise for the Millwall faithful, particularly those who travelled in numbers to back the team on the final day.
“Incredible, they’ve been brilliant,” Neil said. “We’ve got a lot of gratitude and appreciation for them, for how they have backed us in all the matches.”
He highlighted the fans’ commitment during some of the most demanding periods of the season.
“I go back to the deep winter — Luton away, Portsmouth away on a Tuesday night — when we needed to pick up those points,” said the Scottish boss. “They were vital games for us at that stage, and they pulled us through.”
Looking back on the run-in, Neil credited the supporters for helping create the momentum that kept Millwall in the play-off race until the final day.
“We got the wins we needed and it set us up for the remaining games,” he said.
“Obviously, a little bit of nerves tingling there when they are serenading the players — it was a fantastic experience, and we do appreciate that from them.
