‘Always the case’ – England interim boss explains first start for Crystal Palace keeper
Interim boss Lee Carsley says Dean Henderson’s form with Crystal Palace warranted a first England start for the goalkeeper.
Henderson, who made his debut in 2020 after coming as a substitute against the Republic of Ireland, was handed his first start for his country in the 3-1 win over Finland on Sunday evening.
The 27-year-old came into the side for regular number one Jordan Pickford, who has started the last three major tournaments for the Three Lions.
Henderson joined Palace from Manchester United at the start of the 2023-24 season and became number one at Selhurst Park after Sam Johnstone picked up an elbow injury on international duty in March.
“It was always a case that he [Henderson] was going to play one of the other games,” said Carsley.
“He deserves it – he’s been in really good form at Crystal Palace.
“It’s important that we keep seeing what’s available.”
Goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice gave the Three Lions all three points in their Nations League clash.
