Bristol City coaching role for former Charlton Athletic coach Jason Euell

Jason Euell has been appointed to Bristol City’s backroom team – less than a week after leaving his first-team coach role at Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks announced the 45-year-old’s departure on June 23.

Euell was brought on to the senior set up by Nigel Adkins in April 2021 and then assisted Johnnie Jackson after he took caretaker charge of team affairs.

He initially stayed on after Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard opted not to retain Jackson and Terry Skiverton at the end of last season.

Euell has been appointed first-team coach at Bristol City.

Euell told their club website: “Once people were aware that I left Charlton all of a sudden there was an interest. But it wasn’t the case of just jumping back into a job after a matter of days, it was something that I felt was right.

“Knowing that Nigel was here, I played under him at Southampton, and I know Curtis as well, so it felt right. Knowing that Nigel made that initial reach out made me think that he can be someone who can help me and everyone else associated with the club moving forward.

“I’m fully behind the club’s ambitions. It’s a discussion I had with Richard Gould on Saturday [at the Robins High Performance Centre] with the new training centre being built…I sat there and said: ‘This is Premier league ready’.

“Everything that has been happening over the last 12 months is gearing towards this season and, as we all know, anything is possible in the Championship. You can always be classed as favourites to be relegated or favourites to be a mid-table team but there’s nothing to say we won’t be able to push for promotion.”

City manager Nigel Pearson added:  “Jason will really add to our coaching and bring different skills and experiences to the group. He met the players at training this morning and we are all looking forward to working with him.”
