Bromley boss disappointed at second-half showing in Grimsby loss

Andy Woodman admitted he was disappointed with Bromley’s second-half performance as they were beaten 2-0 by Grimsby at Hayes Lane.

It was a first-half that lacked quality in the final third. Both sides had periods of possession and tried to use the wide areas to cause issues to their opponents but neither managed to have any clear quality in the final third.

Bromley came close to taking the lead before the break via Louis Dennis. He was denied twice by Grimsby keeper Jordan Wright, he also saw an effort blocked as he looked the most dangerous in Bromley colours.

‘Disappointed, I think that is the perfect word’, said Woodman. “First half we should have gone in a goal, if not two goals up. We were really good in the first half other than the first five minutes, we played some good football, created some good chances and their keeper made a couple of good saves. We were in complete control of the game.’

However, it was the Mariners that started the second-half the stronger and they were in front less than a minute into the second period. Skipper Danny Rose’s effort looped over Bromley stopper Grant Smith and into the net.

Woodman said: “Second half, we just kill ourselves.

“We have a throw-in in their half of the pitch and we end up conceding from it. By defending badly, and being a bit wide open at the wrong time, the second goal ends the game.

“We were poor second half, I can’t get away from that. They let us create very little and we helped them by not creating anything. We have to be better. We need to be a bit more positive. When you go a goal down you can’t get nervous, that’s not how football works.

“There is no doubt about that, we looked nervous after it and that’s not something I’ve seen our team do, to be honest.”

Woodman’s side have not recorded a shutout since the 3-0 win at Gillingham at the start of the month.

He explained. “We have to start getting clean sheets. I’ve made no secret of it since I’ve been here and I’ll make no secret of it now, clean sheets breed confidence and we need to go back to basics a bit. We need to put a team out there that is solid and can do the job.”
