Charlie Edwards in no rush to be mixing it back at world level after successful ring return

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlie Edwards is in no hurry to be back in world title contention after making his ring return on Saturday night.

The Croydon fighter won 99-91 against Kyle Williams as he boxed at bantamweight.

Edwards had not fought since August 2019. He vacated the WBC world flyweight title after a no contest against classy Mexican Julio Cesar Martinez, who went on to claim the belt in his next bout.

Edwards (16-1) told iFL TV: “It was nice to be back. It was a tough fight – he pushed me all the way. I had to stay switched on.

“I felt a bit nervous beforehand after all the s*** with my weight cut and the fight [a no contest against Julio Cesar Martinez]. So it was nice to get the first one out the way.

“I’d give myself a six or a seven. I’m being harsh on myself, maybe an eight. But I was ring rusty and I had a bit of nerves – it played a part.”

Edwards is expecting to drop down a division.

“I’m totally a super-flyweight,” he said. “When I left for the arena tonight I wasn’t much over the bantamweight limit. It shows I could make super-flyweight, but it was nice to make weight with a little less stress.

“I’m in no rush [to be back at world level]. I want to build my confidence back up and develop a bit more before we go again.

“I haven’t been in a 10-round contest since I boxed [Angel] Moreno [in March 2019]. I’ve been out the ring a long time.”
