Charlton Athletic boss explains absences from squad for Stevenage match

Nathan Jones has confirmed that Karoy Anderson was handed a rest after missing out on the matchday squad for Charlton’s 0-0 draw against Stevenage today.

The Jamaican international had been away with his country for Concacaf Nations League matches against USA and Panama at the end of last month.

Anderson, 19, started in Friday’s 1-1 draw at Exeter City but was replaced at the interval by Freddie Ladapo.

“Anderson is a young kid who has played six, seven or eight games on the spin and been absolutely magnificent,” said Charlton manager Jones, when asked about his exclusion this afternoon. “He has travelled to America and had to train out there in the heat – then come back.

“He looked really jaded the other day. Just freshen him up, give him a couple of days off and he’ll be back.”

The other change saw January addition Macaulay Gillesphey not involved with Rarmani Edmonds-Green starting in his place in the three-man backline.

“Gillesphey’s hamstrings were tight, so it was a call we made on it,” said Jones.

Former Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham was also unavailable.

“He is closer than what he was the other day,” said Jones. “We hope we have all these back for the weekend, so we can have different options.

“It has been a frustrating one because we’ve only seen him for 20 minutes.”
