Charlton Athletic boss makes no attempt to deny deal for former Luton and Northampton Town striker
Nathan Jones has made no attempt to dismiss that Charlton Athletic are set to add experienced frontman Danny Hylton to their squad.
We broke the news on Friday that the 35-year-old, who has been training with the Addicks since pre-season, was set to sign a short-term deal.
Hylton is poised to get the same length contract as centre-back Dan Potts, who was confirmed as a Charlton player on Friday.
Potts, 30, who has been a free agent since leaving Luton at the end of last season, was an unused sub in today’s 1-1 draw against Rotherham United.
Camden-born Hylton was signed by the Hatters when Jones was their boss and scored 21 goals in each of his first two seasons there in League Two as they won promotion.
He spent six seasons on their books before two campaigns with Northampton Town, who released him at the start of the summer.
“Anyone we bring in now has to be better or different to what we’ve got,” said Jones, asked about a deal pending for Hylton.
“I’ve worked at a club and Pottsy, for example, did brilliant for me. There aren’t many left-sided, left-footed defenders there and if Macca (Macaulay Gillesphey) is not there we lose something in terms of our build-up and our play.
“That’s why we have done that for Pottsy.
“We had to see if his fitness was good and we’ve done that and brought him in.
“Whatever we do with Danny Hylton, Danny Hylton has been magnificent for me. If we do something like that it will be for a reason and if we do I’ll explain why that is.”
