Charlton Athletic captain’s run of 343 matches without red card ended as he misses games against Burton, Walsall and Crawley
Greg Docherty will start a three-match suspension tonight with the Charlton Athletic club captain dismissed in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town.
The Scottish midfielder was sent off for the first time in his professional career.
Docherty had played a total of 343 matches without receiving his marching orders prior to the weekend’s fixture at John Smith’s Stadium. That included 213 games in all competitions in English football and a further 130 in Scottish football.
He was red carded for a late challenge on Terriers’ Nigel Lonwijk in the first half, shortly after Matty Godden had equalised for the Addicks from the penalty spot.
Docherty will miss tonight’s match at Burton Albion, Saturday’s FA Cup second round tie against Walsall and next Tuesday’s home fixture against Crawley Town.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones, speaking about his sending off, said at the weekend: “It had a huge effect on the game.
“We weren’t able to be as aggressive or front-footed as we want but even with that, we created three or four good chances in the second-half that we should have scored. We had two point-blank headers we should have scored. We had a late chance. We had enough chances to have got something from the game even with 10 men.”
