Charlton Athletic confirm backroom departure

Charlton Athletic have confirmed that Anthony Hayes has left the League One club.

The Irishman had not been involved in the first-team coaching set-up after Michael Appleton was appointed as Dean Holden’s successor in The Valley hotseat on September 8.

Hayes had been promoted through the academy set-up and was brought into the senior backroom team when Ben Garner took charge.

He took interim charge of the team following Garner’s dismissal last season and led the Addicks to an EFL penalty shootout win over Brighton to set up a lucrative away tie at Manchester United.

When Holden was sacked in late August it was former Charlton defender Jason Pearce who was appointed as caretaker for the Valley fixture against Fleetwood Town – with Hayes assisting him – before Appleton took the job.

Hayes said “Charlton is a special place with great people and a proud pathway that can and should never be taken for granted. I’ll look back at my time with the club fondly and with immense pride.

“I want to wish the club, Michael and all of his staff, the players and the supporters all the very best for this season and beyond.”
