Charlton Athletic head coach search flags up Millwall boss Gary Rowett

Former Millwall manager Gary Rowett is one of the out-of-work bosses that has come up on Charlton Athletic’s radar.

The Addicks are in the process of searching for a new head coach after sacking Michael Appleton on Tuesday.

The South London Press reported in Friday’s paper – and our weekly pod – that ex-Luton Town manager Nathan Jones had been contacted about the vacancy.

Former Birmingham boss John Eustace and Michael Duff, most recently at Swansea City but with solid League One achievements at Barnsley and Cheltenham Town, were also strong early contenders.

Rowett has been out of work since opting to leave Millwall in October after a four-year spell which saw him push them on to the fringes of the play-offs in a number of seasons.

The 49-year-old had a spell at Charlton Athletic as a player when they were a Premier League club but a knee injury blighted his stay as he made just 13 appearances and he retired in July 2004.

It is thought that Rowett – who was in the mix for a return to Birmingham City and Rotherham – would be unlikely to drop below Championship level.
