Charlton Athletic manager Jones names one boss unfortunate not to be shortlisted for EFL accolade
Charlton boss Jones has made the cut of four that are up for the accolade along with Chris Davies (Birmingham City), Phil Parkinson (Wrexham) and Richie Wellens (Leyton Orient).
The EFL awards night is held in London on Sunday.
“Look, good work is good work,” said Jones, who has been in the Valley hotseat for 15 months. “I don’t think there is anyone in there that people go:
‘Wow, how did that person get in there?’.
“I would add Dave Challinor in that, bearing in mind where his team are and they came up this season – so it is their first year in the division. He has done wonderful, wonderful work.
“Everyone nominated would deserve it in their own right.
“Birmingham have won the league and got promoted – they have been fantastic. They have had magnificent resources but you still have to perform, so the manager there has different challenges to someone like myself or Richie Wellens, for example.
“Parky is continuing the upward climb. Yes, they have good resources but they came into a new division and had to adapt. They have adapted fantastically well.
“Richie, on probably less resources than others, has done very, very well and continues to improve his football club.
“I think there are so many that deserve lots of things. You look at someone like Gary Bowyer who has gone in [at Burton] and had a really big upturn. There are lots of managers who do jobs in different circumstances – so to say one is better than another is very difficult.
“What is good is that our work in the short term, this season, has been recognised. That is my biggest pride.
“I’m not moonwalking through Greenwich thinking I’ve suddenly cracked it. But it is recognition for a lot of good work that has gone on at the football club over a very short period of time.”
