Charlton Athletic midfielder Conor Coventry: We’ll find that right balance in the side
Conor Coventry admitted that Charlton Athletic need to find the right balance in midfield – but is confident that they will get it right.
Both Nathan Jones has spoken of a desire to improve fluidity with the ball and Coventry, speaking after the 2-1 home defeat against Blackpool, agreed there is room for improvement in that department.
He said: “It’s something we can improve on and are looking to improve on. We just have to find the right balance of having that strong structure and being hard to play against and also having the fluidity a times.
“I think we’ll get there. It’s a work in progress. We’re still a relatively new group and I have a lot of belief that we’ll find that right balance and get it right.”
Signed from West Ham in January, Coventry has received plenty of praise for his performances at the start of this campaign.
“I feel like there’s still a lot more to come,” added the Waltham Forest born 24-year-old.
“The gaffer is improving me a lot. I feel like I’m coming on and want to keep doing that. The main thing for me is team accolades ahead of personal ones.
“I just want us to win every week – that’s the aim for me going into every game. I feel like I’m improving but there’s a lot more I want to see come out of my games.”
The Seasiders loss was Charlton’s first at home since February and just their second of the League One campaign. But whilst the Addicks sit 4th in the early table, Coventry said the side hasn’t peaked yet.
He explained: “On paper it’s been a good start. We’re disappointed with some aspects of it. But we can improve. We all feel we haven’t really reached the level we can get to yet, far from it. There’s a lot we can improve, and we will.
“With the group and the staff I know that we will improve and everyone is working their socks off every day to see to that. I have a lot of belief in the group for the coming season and despite the loss hopeful of what we’ve can achieve.
“We feel how much the fans want [promotion] and we all want it as well, so much. We identified that early, that’s the goal, we want to achieve promotion. It’ going to be a season of ups and downs. As a group we need to keep belief in each other. Keep working, keep ironing out things that we need to improve on. I believe we can definitely achieve something.”
