Charlton boss has his say over January plan for on-loan Norwich City centre-back

Charlton will not rush into a decision over Akin Famewo’s loan situation – especially if there is any possibility the EFL season could grind to a temporary halt.

There had been talk of a ‘circuit break’ due to the increase in positive Covid-19 cases that have disrupted the domestic football calendar.

But the indications are that the EFL and Premier League want their campaigns to continue despite a spate of postponements.

Six out of the 11 League One fixtures were cancelled on Tuesday night.

The Addicks had been due to face Peterborough United yesterday and also saw a home game against Bristol Rovers befall the same fate just before Christmas.

Charlton have the option to abort Famewo’s loan in January. The Norwich City centre-back has been sidelined twice due to injury this season – the latest an ankle problem.

The SE7 outfit are constrained by a salary cap and need to make every slot in their squad count.

“Akin is injured but hopefully we can keep hold of him,” said Charlton manager Lee Bowyer. “You have to sometimes look at the bigger picture. We’re not going to rush any decision with Akin, we’ll see how things play out.

“There might be an outside chance that games get cancelled. Now if that is the case and if the rumours of it moving along a month then Akin won’t be back long after that. It’s something we’ve got to take into account.

“We’re not going to make any rash decisions. You need to look at what he has done since he has been here – he has played very well. So that is something on the back burner.”
