Charlton line up Gilbey and Washington deals – but need EFL approval for transactions

Charlton Athletic have agreed deals for Alex Gilbey and Connor Washington – but need EFL approval to push the transfers through.

Milton Keynes midfielder Gilbey, 25, is understood to have passed a medical earlier this week.

A fee had been agreed between the two League One clubs.

And Charlton are also at an advanced stage as they look to land Hearts striker Washington.

But it now remains to be seen if the EFL will ratify the transfers.

The Addicks were placed under a player embargo in January after East Street Investments took control of the football club but  had not had their takeover approved.

Charlton’s signings in the January window were loan signings. And even then they only effectively replaced Conor Gallagher, Jonathan Leko and Beram Kayal – who all returned to their parent clubs in January.

The Addicks need to add to their squad as their numbers have been significantly reduced.

Jonny Williams, Jake Forster-Caskey and Ben Amos have all taken up options to extend their stays but Tom Lockyer has an option to leave for nothing following relegation while Naby Sarr and Adam Matthews look unlikely to return. Tomer Hemed is also a free agent.

They have also lost their loan signings – Josh Cullen, Andre Green, Sam Field and Aiden McGeady.

Gilbey has one year left to run on his MK deal and has won back-to-back Player of the Year awards there.
