The Ecuadoran men’s national team heads into the 2024 Copa America on a winning note thanks to Moises Caicedo’s impactful performance against Honduras.
Caicedo assisted once in Ecuador’s 2-1 victory over Honduras in East Hartford, Connecticut. The win gave the Ecuadorians a major confidence boost heading into their group stage opener on June 22.
Caicedo teed up Jeremy Sarmiento for Ecuador’s opening goal of the match in the eighth minute. Sarmiento made no mistake, drilling a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
Bryan Rochez tied the match for Honduras but Pedro Hincapie’s powerful header in the 89th minute proved to be the deciding goal.
Caicedo was impressive all around, winning seven duels, making one interception, creating three offensive opportunities, and completing 93 per cent of his passes. The 22-year-old is coming off a career-best season at Stamford Bridge, logging 48 combined appearances, one goal, and four assists.
Ecuador faces Venezuela in its opening match of the Copa America on June 22. Jamaica and Mexico will also join them in group stage play.
