Chuks Aneke hopes that Shrewsbury stopper Marko Marosi receives support needed following ‘discriminatory’ abuse allegation

Chuks Aneke hopes that Marko Marosi will receive support after the Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper reported receiving abuse of a ‘discriminatory’ nature at The Valley on Saturday.

The visiting player alerted referee Sam Purkiss to the alleged incident during the closing stages of Charlton’s 2-0 home win. The game was halted for around seven minutes whilst security staff dealt with the situation.

An Addicks statement said that: “The club can confirm that police are investigating the incident and appealing for information,” correcting an earlier announcement that someone had been arrested in relation to the incident.

Aneke, who scored the hosts’ second of the game moments after the match was restarted, said: “There’s no space for racism in life, let alone in football. There’s no need for it. That’s definitely disappointing but hopefully it gets dealt with in the right way and the player gets supported.

“I’m not really sure what happened. [Marosi] was a bit disappointed at something. The captain was there trying to sort it out so fair play to them.

“If he’s heard something, he’s got to support his teammate. I was just trying to get the game sped up a bit but fair play to the captain for stopping the game and supporting his player.”

Aneke’s late header sealed the win for Charlton in their final home game of the campaign.

“It was a good performance from the boys,” he added.

“Good to get the two goals, a good way to see out the season.

“That’s what I’m here to do. I’m here to affect games in that way. I’ve come on again and got a goal, so I’m delighted. I did it last time when I was here and that’s what I aim to do, to come on the pitch and make an effect on the game.”
