Croydon’s Charlie Edwards wins WBC world flyweight title

Charlie Edwards is the new WBC flyweight champion after a unanimous points win over Cristofer Rosales at The 02 tonight.
The Croydon fighter won by margins of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.
Edwards was largely in control of the contest but suffered a cut to his scalp.
He was confident he had won even before the verdict was announced, sinking to the canvas in elation. And he was struggling to contain his emotions before the official scorecards were announced.
Edwards said: “That’s for you mum. She said to never give up on my dream.
“I’m so obsessed with this sport, I live it day in and day out. I asked, I believed and I received.
“I believed from the moment the fight was announced. It’s a dream come true. I’m lost for words. I had a lot of doubters.
“I want to unify the division but I’ll leave those decisions to Eddie [Hearn, promoter] and my management team MTK. I take these fights because I’m ready for anyone. I made weight comfortably.”
Edwards’ record is 15 wins and just one loss, when he challenged for the IBF title against John Riel Casimero in September 2016.
