Crystal Palace’s red-hot striker does not earn praise from boss despite bagging brace at West Ham
Jean-Philippe Mateta continued his excellent goalscoring form under Oliver Glasner after scoring both goals in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win at West Ham on Saturday.
However, the Austrian boss was not keen on singling out the French striker, pictured right, for praise after the victory at the London Stadium.
Mateta scored his seventh and eighth Premier League goals of the season in a second-half brace against the Hammers, taking his tally to 24 goals in 39 games under Glasner.
The 27-year-old has scored more league goals this season than Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, as well as Tottenham duo Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min.
“When the striker is confident, he scores goals,” said Glasner. “I’m always looking at the whole performance. We don’t give the opposition many chances.
“When you saw the goal we scored at Leicester, Ismaila Sarr was in the right position and found JP because he made the run. Today, it was Eberechi Eze who was in the right position and found JP’s run.
“JP alone couldn’t score goals. He needs the players around him to give him the ball.
“When he gets it in the right areas, this is what we’re working on day by day, then we know he has an amazing finish.”
