David Livermore expecting to still be in temporary charge for Norwich City fixture
Millwall caretaker head coach David Livermore has admitted it looks likely he will still be in charge for the Boxing Day fixture at Norwich City.
The Lions’ former midfielder was placed in temporary control after the departure of Neil Harris.
Livermore had been Harris’ long-term assistant and took on the main job as the South Londoners began the process of appointing a successor.
Former Stoke and Preston boss Alex Neil, Wycombe’s Matt Bloomfield and Steve Schumacher, who has had spells with Plymouth and Stoke, have all held talks with Millwall.
Livermore made a winning start to his tenure with substitute Mihailo Ivanovic heading a stoppage-time winner against Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.
Asked if he had been told how much longer he would be left holding the reins, he said: “I think it is a day by day thing. If there was a new manager in on Monday morning, no issue. Let’s crack on. I’ve been told by the chairman that I will be here beyond this season. My contract runs out at the end of the season – we’ve had that chat.
“That will be my next task but I’ve been told I will be here beyond this season. When the new guy comes in I imagine he will want to bring at least one person with him. I’m really comfortable with that. I think I’m average to good at a number of things. I’m quite good at moulding whatever the next head coach wants me to do.
“The conversations I do have it looks like, unless anything has changed since the last time I spoke to the chairman, that I will be in charge for Thursday against Norwich.
“But again, that could change. I don’t know.
“It’s nice to put an end to that (three straight losses) today but people talk about being level. You can be on a fantastic run and then you know a couple of defeats it is looked at in a different way. So just be level and pleased with the win.
“There is a bit of luck with our opponent being down to 10 men and having used all their subs. But we tweaked it slightly putting Duncan (Watmore) down the left and Aidomo (Emakhu) down the middle – get Duncan and Rom inside to overload it and get our full-backs on. They were only playing one up top at the time.
“Hopefully that had a benefit to us winning the game but sometimes you’re better off being lucky than good.
“We edged it.”
Livermore revealed he had spoken to Harris on Friday.
“I will speak to him at some point. I know Neil – he will probably watch the game or get the game and watch it. I’ll definitely talk to him, get some feedback and see what he saw. That is important.”
