David Livermore signs off Millwall caretaker boss stint with ‘solid point’ at Coventry City

Millwall caretaker boss David Livermore was pleased with the point picked up in their final game of 2024.

The Lions played out a goalless draw with Coventry City this afternoon.

Livermore is now set to hand over control of first-team affairs to Alex Neil. The former Stoke City, Preston and Norwich manager was at the match and is set to be confirmed as Neil Harris’ successor.

The match against the Sky Blues never really provided any standout moments with just three shots on target during the 90 minutes.

Coventry came closest to winning the game in the second half, Jack Rudoni hit the upright with the ball somehow not going over the line.

Livermore told Millwall TV: “It is a real solid point.

“I just felt it was important today that we came away from here with something, the effort the lads put in having played just three days ago was fantastic.

“The shape was really, really good. We would like to have been a bit more of an attacking threat and shown a bit more of that side of us, but to come away with a point was a good result for us.

“They are good at building their play, they are good at finding their space.

“It was important we stopped Ben Sheaf getting hold of the ball today. Their movement and rotation is good, Sakamoto on his left foot is dangerous. We have not been able to do a lot of stuff on the grass because of the schedule, we’ve done a lot of video work.

“We nullified their threats well but I would like us to have shown a bit more as an attacking force but you can’t always have it all. It felt as so as long as the game went on there was a point there for us and it was important we came away with something.”

The Lions were without Liam Roberts, Wes Harding and Ryan Wintle, who all missed out due to a virus spreading in the squad.

“We’ve almost lost a player a day through illness, ” said Livermore. “Ryan Wintle on Friday, Liam Roberts yesterday, Wes Harding today – so we have a bit of illness in the camp.

“This time of year you expect a lot of bumps and bruises – it’s tough to get yourself recovered, prep and go again.

“Today is one where you want to use your bench but you also sometimes feel that the players are in a rhythm in the game and sometimes you can bring a sub on and they find it hard to get into the game. It just felt like we were getting to a point in the game where we looked okay and I felt it was important we stayed with the players we’ve got on the pitch, bringing on a player with the experience of Tom Bradshaw helped us with that also.”
