Dons boss explains why goalkeeper and defender missed Barrow defeat – with Walsall clash on Tuesday
AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson has explained why Nik Tzanev and Huseyin Biler missed Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Barrow.
Goalkeeper Tzanev, who had played every minute in League Two this season, was not named in the matchday squad for the trip to Holker Street.
The New Zealander’s absence led to Nathan Broome, 20, making his league debut for the Dons.
“Nik has been trying to manage an ongoing injury,” Jackson told the club’s YouTube channel.
“It got to the point where he felt unable to play and it was affecting him enough that it would be to the detriment of the team. No problem, in came Broomey.
Defender Biler also missed out despite only returning from a hamstring injury in the 1-0 defeat at home to Crawley a week prior.
“Hus was a bit of a blow because, on Friday, he was in the team and the shape we wanted to play.
“We lost him at the very last minute, so you have to shuffle the pack again. Having just got him back, I can’t tell you how frustrating that is.
“Just when you think you’re getting the lads back, it’s not the case and you’re losing another one.
“We came here with nine missing and knowing it was going to be difficult, but the young lads and everyone who did play gave it everything.”
The Dons’ winless run was extended to 11 games after Barrow came from a goal down – thanks to Luke Jenkins’ opener – to win 2-1.
Johnnie Jackson’s side, who have only won once in 2023, host Walsall at Plough Lane on Tuesday night.
