Former Charlton defender can see some positives despite 2-1 League One loss at Huddersfield

Former Charlton Athletic defender Steve Brown felt there were aspects of Charlton Athletic’s second-half display at Huddersfield Town which merited praise despite the South Londoners’ poor League One form continuing.

The Addicks have suffered back to back league losses and collected six points from as many matches – putting them 18th in a table for that period.

Matt Godden’s penalty had cancelled out Matt Pearson’s headed opener at John Smith’s Stadium. But Greg Docherty’s straight red card for a late challenge ratcheted up the challenge facing Nathan Jones’ side with David Kasumu lashing a 63rd-minute winner.

Brown told Charlton TV: “There is an unrealistic look at times to Charlton statistics that says one shot on target – which is the goal. The same was said down at Exeter, yet it doesn’t tell the tale of the tape – the misses.

“Mitchell, at Exeter, should’ve scored. Godden, down at Exeter, should’ve scored. Today we’ve had Ahadme, should’ve scored and Leaburn…I don’t think he should’ve scored it just would have been a wonderful goal from our perspective and his perspective.

“We’ve huffed and puffed, given it a go second half, and that is all you can ask when you are down to 10 men away at a side in very, very good form at the John Smith’s Stadium. They are strong at home and looked dominant after half an hour, they took the lead and could’ve had a second, then you think this could get naughty.

“The turning point comes with the sending off. I’ve viewed it many, many times and I think he has no option to send Docherty off for that challenge.

“But you can’t have a pop at this Charlton side for that second half. They created opportunities and were undone by one of two good chances, the other was a magnificent save from Maynard-Brewer from Wiles.

“They have been a little bit unlucky. They have given themselves a mountain to climb, at times, by the way they go about it. We looked more dangerous with 10 men than we did with 11 in the first half. Maybe there are some crumbs of comfort for Nathan Jones in that second 45 minutes – how the side can create chances when it gets on the front foot.”
