George Dobson quizzed on Charlton Athletic future – with Addicks skipper having signed pre-contract agreement with Fehervar

George Dobson declined to be drawn on his Charlton Athletic future but described being captain of the club as the “best honour” in his career.

Dobson penned a pre-contract agreement with Hungarian side Fehervar in February, with his Charlton deal expiring at the end of this campaign.

But boss Nathan Jones has repeatedly expressed his desire to keep Dobson at The Valley.

The South London Press has been told that the terms of the Fehervar move are binding. If so, the only way Dobson would be able to be at Charlton next season would seem to be if the League One club negotiated a transfer fee.

Dobson was quizzed on his future at Charlton’s Player of the Year awards.

When asked about his future, Dobson told Charlton Live: “There is not a lot I can comment on.

“I don’t want to be the awkward egg in the room. Football is a weird game. A lot of things happen behind the scenes that you can’t comment on.

“It’s an incredible football club. Whatever happens, I have had the most incredible three years.

“To captain this football club has been the best honour in my career.

“I genuinely think it will be the best honour of my career.

“I don’t want to comment too much on it, because I can’t. We will see.

“I have no regrets on my behalf. I do [think it could have been handled better by Charlton] but that’s football.”

Dobson has made 144 appearances for the Addicks since joining from Sunderland in July 2021.

“With football, some people work with football clubs and some people don’t,” he added.

“I was at Sunderland, an incredible football club, and I just didn’t work there – I didn’t play very well there.

“I have come to Charlton and I have just connected on and off the pitch.

“They have welcomed my family incredibly well. I have stayed fit, played to a good level, and the fans have appreciated me. I have appreciated them unconditionally.

“My only regret is that the team didn’t do better. My dream was to always captain a team that got promoted from this level.”
