‘He deserved it’ – Oliver Glasner delivers Justin Devenny verdict after first Crystal Palace goal

Oliver Glasner was always confident in Justin Devenny starting in his side after the academy midfielder netted his first goal for Crystal Palace in the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Devenny was handed his Eagles senior debut in the 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham before the international break and was called up to the Northern Ireland squad for the first time on the back of his Premier League start.

The 21-year-old was entrusted with a starting role at Villa Park and put Glasner’s side 2-1 up before half-time when he finished off Ismaila Sarr’s cross along the face of goal.

Ross Barkley equalised late on to deny Palace all three points.

“He had some words in the dressing room after the game – I didn’t understand anything,” said Glasner.

“He was with us during our pre-season in the USA – he’s an unbelievable footballer who is very technical and can run a lot.

“He can play four positions in our system. He understands the game and finds space.

“He can also score goals, and this is what he has shown. We were very confident in him starting.

“He is a very good player. If a player shows it in training, he deserves the chance. He deserved it.

“If a player has his quality and works hard, then you get the reward. We kept him back a bit so he could develop in the right way, but it’s good we have such great players from our academy.”
