‘He will help us a lot’ – Cifuentes runs rule over new QPR signing Edwards

QPR boss Marti Cifuentes was delighted to start the January transfer window with a signing of the very first day of the month.

Rangers have signed central defender Ronnie Edwards on a loan deal until the end of the season from Southampton. The former Peterborough United defender watched the club’s 3-1 win against Watford from the directors’ box.

“Credit to the club for getting someone in very soon,” said Cifuentes. “The picture [at centre back] changed unfortunately in a few days with the injury of [Steve] Cook against Preston and Liam Morrison having an injury.

“Both of them will be some weeks [injured] and we cannot afford to have another situation like Swansea [in the 3-0 defeat] where we were too short in this position.

“He’s a very good player. In possession, I think he will help as lot. He is hungry to get minutes and show his level and hopefully he turns out to be a very good players for us.”

Jimmy Dunne has taken Cook’s place at centre-back in the last two games, and he continued his good recent form with a goal against Watford. Although he is now likely to revert to right back following the signing of Edwards, Cifuentes is happy to utilise the Irishman in either role.

“It’s very hard to keep him out of the team, I’m not thinking about it!” said the QPR boss. “He’s playing so well. All the credit to him. He adapts to right full back, he had the last 10 months playing in this position and performing at a fantastic level.

“Now the last two games he’s playing as a centre-back at a very high level, not only in aerial duels but also with his responsibility and his character.

“Today he had an issue with his shoulder, but he kept pushing. Very important player for us.”
