‘He’s the best in his position in League One’ – AFC Wimbledon midfielder gets major compliment
AFC Wimbledon head coach Mark Robinson has claimed that his captain Alex Woodyard is the best in his position in League One.
The Dons midfielder won four tackles and completed the most touches (70) and passes (59) of any Dons player during the 90 minutes in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Morecambe.
Woodyard joined the South Londoners at the start of last season when he was let go by Peterborough United. His two-year deal is set to expire at the end of the season but he confirmed to the South London Press in December that talks were ongoing.
“If there is a better midfield player in the country, at this level in League One, then I haven’t seen one,” Robinson told the South London Press when asked about Woodyard’s performance.
“I can’t remember the last time that I can even say that he had an average game, and I’m not including Oxford because everyone did in that game.”
Woodyard was playing alongside George Marsh at the heart of the Wimbledon side after Anthony Hartigan missed the game due to an injury he picked up in the 1-0 loss at Milton Keynes.
“This is my 52nd game in charge now, and I can’t remember a game when he has ever been just alright,” Robinson added on Woodyard. “He goes from good to outstanding, and today, he was outstanding.”
