‘I had him in a headlock at half-time!’ – Nathan Jones on Charlton Athletic’s set-piece strength after Orient comeback
Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones says he is not worried about how his side win games – but he was delighted they scored twice from set-pieces at Leyton Orient.
Added-time headers from Macaulay Gillesphey and Kayne Ramsay completed a remarkable turnaround victory at Brisbane Road. Both came from Alex Gilbert corners sent towards the far post.
The South Londoners climbed into the top six with the win in east London.
Statistics show that the Addicks had mustered the fourth-highest xG tally from set-pieces in League One before this weekend’s round of fixtures.
Saturday’s double means Charlton have now scored 15 from set-pieces this season – the sixth-best return in the division.
James Brayne was promoted to set-piece and first-team coach for the club during the summer.
Asked about the work that Brayne has done with the side, Jones joked: “Well, I had him in a headlock at half-time because I didn’t feel we had that conviction in our set-plays.
“And we had a lot, I think we had seven or eight in the first half without having any outcomes. And in the second half then, obviously, it was a different taker.
“But to win from two set-plays, I was delighted. I don’t care how we win, I really, really don’t. So it’s just good to get the win.
“You know, for us, what I really liked about us was the mentality that, you know, we kept going, we kept going, we kept believing we could get a result. And even after we scored, we didn’t then go, right, we’re happy with the point away from home. We went, ran, got the ball, came back, put it on the centre circle and said, right, we want to go again.
“That mentality saw us through in the end. I’m really pleased because this is a big win. However you win today, it’s a big win.”
